History: http://mlp.wikia.com/wiki/Twilight_Sparkle
Not too much of Twilight’s past is really known. As a foal, she was foalsat by Cadance, her brother Shining Armor’s girlfriend and future ruler of the Crystal Empire. She ended up taking up her love for studying magic when she saw Princess Celestia raise the sun in the Summer Sun Celebration festival, so much so that her parents decided to enroll her into a special school for gifted foals. However, the entrance exam proved to be frightening as she was told to hatch a dragon’s egg, said to be impossible. Despite her best efforts, she failed… until a mysterious explosion (later revealed to be Rainbow Dash’s first Sonic Rainboom) frightened her and unleashed her latent magic. The egg hatched, revealing a baby purple dragon, but Twilight’s power ran out of control until Celestia herself intervened. Impressed with Twilight’s magic, she not only accepted her into the school, but also as her personal student. The unleashing of magic also lead to her gaining her Cutie Mark.
However, the years of being a student took its toll on Twilight’s personal behavior. She dove more and more into her books, neglecting friends as she did. She was convinced by those same friends to attend a party for a fellow shut in named Moondancer and she agreed… before finding out that the up coming Summer Sun Celebration was going to be the 1000th one since the Nightmare Moon incident and said villain would come back. Despite warning Celestia, Celestia opted to instead send her to Ponyville to check up on some things there and to make a few friends. Despite her protests, Twilight went along with it and met five other ponies - fashionista Rarity, high-speed flyer Rainbow Dash, farm hand Applejack, hyper-active party thrower Pinkie Pie and timid animal lover Fluttershy. Twilight proves very reluctant to accept the five, however the return of Nightmare Moon proves that the five are quite worried for Twilight’s safety, especially when she decides to hunt down the Elements of Harmony, the items needed to put away the fiend again. Despite her reluctance, the five follow her and end up showing their biggest traits - Generosity, Loyalty, Honesty, Laughter and Kindness. It’s through this that Twilight ends up reawakening the Elements with the sixth Element, Magic and the six use the reawakened power to defeat Nightmare Moon, reverting her to her true form as Celestia’s sister Luna. Though ordered to return to Canterlot to continue her studies, Twilight proves reluctant to abandon her new friends so suddenly, leading to Celestia allowing Twilight to stay in Ponyville.
Her time in Ponyville had a bunch of ups and downs, dealing with problems ranging from her friends to outside influences. Even her own teacher gave her a few problems during this time frame, ranging from giving her two tickets to the Gala when she could have easily given seven, and sending her to deal with a dragon. She also let her pet Phoenix alone with them as well, causing a minor panic. Twilight also had to learn how to cope with finding her own place in Winter Wrap Up, a traditional holiday for Earth Ponies and Pegasi by finding her organizational place in the town festivities.. She also met up with a boastful unicorn named Trixie, and helped set things right again, when the two foals Snips and Snails set an Ursa Minor onto the town.
Her real next challenge was the reawakening of Discord, a creature of Chaos who caused mayhem in Equestria 1000 years prior. Things proved tough when Twilight interpreted a riddle Discord gave her with the whereabouts of the Elements, leading to the other five to be corrupted and leaving Twilight to despair before Celestia helped snap her out of it by returning the Friendship Reports she was set and getting her to read them. With renewed vitality, Twilight rescued her friends and resealed Discord away.
A week later, those Friendship Reports proved to be a bad problem when Twilight started going crazy when she realized she never sent one for the week. Her attempts to do so caused chaos in Ponyville until a very upset Celestia intervened. Thankfully, things were tempered when Twilight’s friends took the blame, realizing that their friend was in trouble and they brushed it off as if she was just overreacting. More adventures followed throughout the year, and it lead up to the point where Twilight and her friends were invited to a Royal Wedding.
Twilight and her friends were later invited to the wedding of Cadence and Shining Armor, shocked that the two were getting hitched. However, Twilight realized something was off with Cadence when the latter wouldn’t participate in a dance the two used to do when they were younger. However, her attempts to reveal the duplicity is foiled, earning her the ire of everyone and leading her to being cast into a dungeon where she ends up finding the real Cadence. The fake Cadence, now revealed as the Changeling Queen Chrysalis, uses the power of the absorbed love of Shining Armor to take over Canterlot, only for Twilight to free Shining and allow him to use the true power of his and Cadence’s love to drive off the creatures and allow the two to marry for real.
Her adventures with the two weren’t over just yet as the mysterious Crystal Empire finally returned after disappearing many years ago. At Celestia’s orders, Twilight was to help out and only do so alone. However, after learning of the existence of the mysterious Crystal Heart and finding herself helpless to complete her task as told, she ended up saving the day by having Spike, who begged to come along on her mission, retrieve the heart and use it to help save the Empire and allow Cadence and Shining to rule the restored kingdom.
Twilight’s actions set her off on a series of new tests in advanced studies (as it were), one of which had her and her friends attempt to redeem Discord, as well as facing off against Trixie who had returned with the Alicorn Amulet for a Magic Duel.. Twilight’s final test was when she was forced to restore mismatched Cutie Marks caused by a spell she used from her idol Star Swirl’s spellbook. In doing so, she completed a spell that Star Swirl himself couldn’t complete and led Celestia to grant Twilight a once-in-a-lifetime choice, something Twilight accepted and changed her life forever - ascension into alicornhood. Twilight Sparkle was now Princess Twilight Sparkle.
Of course, things weren’t all sunshine and lolipops, no sooner did Twilight become a princess than a former student of Celestia’s, Sunset Shimmer, returned and stole Twilight’s Element. Twilight and Spike followed becoming human and dog respectively. As it turns out, without the Element, Twilight would be stuck in the human world if they didn’t get it back in time. To do so, Twilight is forced to reconcile and reunite the human variations of Rarity, Applejack, Rainbow Dash, Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie and help her win the pageant happening at the time. Despite Sunset’s best efforts to thwart them, Twilight won and Sunset, in desperation, retrieved the Element and used its power to become a fearsome demon. Twilight’s able to retrieve the Element and use its power to awaken the magic within her and the other huMane Five, defeating Sunset. However, an honestly upset and confused Sunset is given a second chance and Twilight convinces the other five to help Sunset on the right path. During this time, Twilight would also meet a boy there named Flash Sentry, who would end up charming Twilight in a mutual crush.
Upon her return, Twilight and the others found themselves dealing with a leftover threat from Discord’s first rampage - an invasion of vines from the Everfree Forest. Despite their best efforts, the only way the the invasion could be stopped was for the six to sacrifice the Elements into the Tree of Harmony, leading to the creation of a mysterious chest. During their quest to figure out how to open the chest, the other five would gain trinkets from others which had a special meaning to them, leaving Twilight wondering where her chance was.
However, this wouldn’t be in time as Lord Tirek, a fiendish creature with the ability to absorb magic, was beginning to make his presence known. When Discord chose to side with Tirek, the princesses opted to give Twilight their power to her to protect it from him. Soon, Tirek, having absorbed virtually every piece of magic and turned on Discord, faced down the powered up Twilight and proved to be an even match, ravaging Ponyville in the process. However, Twilight opted to surrender the power, leading to Twilight acquiring the last item needed to unlock the chest from a very repentant Discord. The chest opened, the six unleashed a new magic that overwhelmed Tirek and restored (most) of the ravaged areas to their pristine states and granted Twilight her own castle. Through her actions, Twilight gained an official title - Princess of Friendship.
During a bit of downtime, Twilight is called back to the human world when the Sirens, a trio of evil mind-controlling creatures, make their presence known and take over a simple talent show, turning it into a Battle of the Bands-type event. However, Twilight isn’t enough to help defeat the Sirens and Sunset, finally becoming good, is what is needed to finally break the spell the Sirens had on everyone, rendering them powerless in the process. Her duties in the Human World done, she left for a second time, keeping a connection open between each world.
Back in her world, Twilight and the others discovered that her new castle brought up a map of Equestria and would request certain ponies to head to a certain location, leading to Twilight’s mission as Ambassadors of Friendship. Their first mission lead them to a frightening town where everyone bore the same Cutie Mark - an equal sign. Their concern and uneasiness is increased when they meet the town’s leader, Starlight Glimmer, who granted everyone their equal sign marks so that everyone could be equal and happy. However, when the six discover that she’s a fraud and still had the town’s Cutie Marks, Starlight stole away theirs, forcing them trapped in the town until the six are able to release the captured Marks, leading to the townspeople to rescue the six’s own Marks. Unable to understand how she could be outwitted AND have a spell she studied years for be used to easily by Twilight, Starlight escaped, pretty much vowing revenge.
Soon afterwards, Twilight would find herself running herself ragged - she didn’t like her new castle because it was just too empty and she missed her old home, which was destroyed in her fight with Tirek. The other five would band together to make it all of their homes after a little bit of trial and error. Even being a princess is hard work and she ends up allowing Spike to take over for a bit so she can get some well-deserved rest, only for the poor dragon to make a mess.
During a later discussion with the dragon, Twilight realizes that she completely forgot about her old friends from Canterlot. When she goes to visit them, all but one re-accept Twilight. That one, Moondancer, is quite angry at Twilight for abandoning her on her party, which was the day Twilight left to go to Ponyville. With a little help from Pinkie Pie, the two are able to reconcile.
Sometime later, Twilight ends up preparing her castle for Shining and Cadence’s arrival - apparently, they have big news and it’s driving Pinkie Pie up the wall because she knows and can’t tell. Twilight ends up preparing a room for Shining with Spike’s help and when her brother and sister-in-law arrive, Shining sends Twilight on a scavenger hunt for what the news is. When she puts it together, she figures it out as they say it - Shining and Cadence is having a baby and Twilight’s an aunt.
Personality: Twilight Sparkle is something of an interesting case compared to the rest of the “Mane Six”. A pony with amazing smarts and an affinity towards logic, she tends to be the rational one of the group. If there’s something going on that seems out of this world, Twilight is usually the one who tries to put it in a way that can be understood to both herself and those around her. Her incredible smarts also translate to an amazing magical talent and this is before her ascension into alicornhood - while most unicorns tend to be able to focus on one magical ability outside of magical telekinesis, Twilight’s able to create just about any sort of magical spell.
Despite this, Twilight isn’t perfect. Being the more logical of the group, this makes her break down when life throws her a curve ball and she isn’t prepared for it at all. Probably the best example of this is the “Lesson Zero” incident, which sent Twilight into a crazed mess because she hadn’t sent a Friendship Report, sending her into a crazed panic, afraid that her teacher and mentor, Princess Celestia, was going to severely punish her for being tardy. She also can’t handle situations that takes logic and launches it out of a cannon, such as Pinkie Pie’s Pinkie Sense and anything to do with Discord. As well, she doesn’t handle situations that rob her of her magic or forces her NOT to use it in some way. These include her first Winter Wrap Up, which put her out of her league because she was so used to using magic and tradition for the holiday forced her to use non-magic means, her first encounter with Discord, who stole away her horn so she wouldn’t solve his maze with magic, and her first trip to the human world, which caused her to scream in a massive panic upon realizing she’s been changed into something else.
Another problem Twilight has is her inability to keep secrets. She’s of the idea that if there’s something VERY important to tell, she should say it right away. However, the two big moments she’s been hit with this - being forced into a Pinkie Promise after being told secrets between Rarity and Fluttershy and Celestia telling Twilight to not tell any other ponies that she now had the powers of four alicorns to protect that power - cause her to react in a painful way. The latter incident more or less caused her to freak out over her new power and the former was because, despite the fact that saying the secrets would have solved the entire problem, Pinkie Pie would spring up out of nowhere and cry out “FOREVER!”, enforcing the Pinkie Promise.
A third problem is that Twilight has an obsession with organization. Twilight was sent to Ponyville to help prepare things for the Summer Sun Festival, her first home in Ponyville was the Golden Oaks Library, she became the head organizer of the Winter Wrap-Up. If Twilight can do something as efficient and tidy as possible, she’ll do it. While she won’t blow up if something doesn’t go just right in terms of the organization - maybe raise her voice a bit - some of the ponies do give her a bit of a hard time over it. As well, it’s not good for her health at times. She stayed away from her castle because it was so huge and lonely and not her home, doing everything in her power to stay away from it until she fell asleep on her pancakes (“I-I’m pancake!”) and another time drove herself to the brink of exhaustion due to her princess duties, leading to Spike to take over.
Twilight’s greatest strength is her ability to learn. She’s already a book smart pony with incredible intelligence. However, unlike the others, who seem to lapse into the same traps over and over (Rainbow Dash and her hot-headedness, Fluttershy and being a doormat, Pinkie Pie being unable to shut up when needed, etc.), Twilight tends to take the lessons she’s learned throughout her time in Ponyville to heart and rarely falls into the same pitholes twice. Even more so, if she’s caught in a similar situation with another, she knows how to deal with it, or at the very least can guide the one affected towards a better path. The best examples of this being the rogue pony Sunset Shimmer, whom Twilight is able to guide her towards a path to redemption (though a path that takes Sunset quite awhile to follow) and Twilight’s abandoned friend Moondancer, who rekindled a horribly shattered friendship due to Twilight’s old dismissive attitude.
Another thing she’s strong with is her ability to teach. Obviously a trait picked up during her time with Princess Celestia, she’s willing to teach anyone anything if needed. However, the teachings can be a mixed bag, depending on the pony involved. When she tried on the Cutie Mark Crusaders, they picked up easily, with Sweetie Belle being the most notable as she’s shown in a later episode being able to pick up a filly with incredible ease, something she never could do on her own. She managed to teach the three about their strengths, such as Scootaloo’s building, Appleblooms potions and Sweetie Belle’s magic, things they had weaknesses in. Her method of teaching is to shore up the weaknesses of somepony, or someone, and help them cover said weakness until they are proficient with their abilities. This makes Twilight a very hooves-on tutor, as she manages to work around their deficiencies. Another major moment is when she figured out that Rainbow Dash learns from information being fed in around her, as her ability to multitask far outstrips her ability to learn from books. So, devising a tutorial technique, she fed Rainbow knowledge so that she could pass her Wonderbolts exam, by inputting the lessons in and around the surrounding area as she took a flight with Rainbow Dash.
Twilight’s OCD comes into question on several occasions, having dealt with the issue that she has a habit of making a list and checking it not once but several times in a row. She has demonstrated a need to make a list for everything and anything, and often making a checklist for things she has to checklist for before actually doing said things. Her studies can be borderline intensive, as she continually pours over her books and has a organizational method that borderlines compulsive behavior. Her need for tidiness is demonstrated whenever a mess is made in her library, and she cleans it up with the help of her friends. It is not to say that Twilight’s OCD is crippling, but rather a part of her personality as she has shown many times when overpreparedness and cooperation with others has created bridges between them. However, she has to follow everything methologically, and it creates a source of tension in between the girls when she cannot deviate. Another example is during the events of the sleepover. Twilight could not deviate from the “rules” of how to sleepover properly, and got upset when her first slumber party was in shambles.
Third-Person Sample: Okay, she had her freak out and finally calmed down from her sudden arrival and powerlessness. Next thing on Twilight’s list was trying to figure out what to do next.
“Okay, so, stuck in another world, no way to contact home… I’ve done this before, but… not as my normal self.” Twilight uttered.
“It would probably be best to ask the other Heroes here what to do now.” Moggleton replied, relaxing on Twilight’s back.
“Yes, that’s true… but the humans here are so different from the ones I met before. I can’t make heads or tails on how they are!” Twilight reasoned. Indeed, many of them were all peach-colored with (perhaps) very basic hair colors, not like those she met in Canterlot High. She would figure out something, though there was something pressing. “C’mon, I need to find the nearest library and I need your help.”
“What’s wrong?” the Moogle replied.
“I need to find out more about this world and more about why my magic was suppressed.” Twilight said.
“It’s not suppressed, it’s--”
“Trust me, it’s suppressed! If it was taken away, I wouldn’t be this bright.” Twilight pointed out. This world was strange and if she was going to be of any use, she’d need to figure out everything.
Mognet Sample: Greetings, everypon-- pardon me, everyONE.
My name is Twilight Sparkle. Yes, I know I saw some stares towards my way because I’m an animal that can talk, but… to be fair, those like you are just as rare in my world. But, it’s okay, I know we’re all different, but I hope this won’t hold us back from our goals and any future bonds we may make along the way. I know we’re all stuck here, but we need to work together if we’re going to figure all of this out, right?
If anyone needs my help with anything, please, don’t be afraid to let me know! I’ll be willing to help in anyway. As long as it doesn’t require me to have opposable thumbs. I’m not used to that yet.
Regards
Twilight Sparkle.
